Open Up is a unique programme for secondary schools to experience contemporary architecture first hand. The programme aims to develop young students design skills and set awareness of their own built environment.
This year I was fortunate enough to work alongside three architectural practices. I worked with AHMM with Highshore School at the Monsoon Accessorize HQ (Yellow Building) designed by AHMM, Duggan Morris with Cator Park School at the Friendship House designed by MJP Architects and Glowacka Rennie with John Roan School at the 201 Bishopsgate and the Broadgate Tower designed by SOM.
This was a rewarding experience as I got the chance to not only teach but to inspire the young and hopefully generate the future architects.
Monsoon Accessorize HQ (Yellow Building)
Monsoon Accessorize is a 15,000sqm seven-level building designed by AHMM which was completed in March 2008. The building is designed round a dramatic top-lit atrium space with a grand open staircase running from bottom to top. Intended to read as a creative powerhouse the building has a strong vivid yellow facade that stands out from its neighbours.
Friendship House
Friendship House is one of the few buildings essentially designed to be a hostel by MJP Architects and was completed in October 2003. The building is designed around a central courtyard. The courtyard contains a pool and fountain which reflect light and produce a gentle white noise that camouflages the noise of the nearby railway and streets.
201 Bishopsgate and the Broadgate Tower
The 201 Bishopsgate and the Broadgate Tower is a 35 story building located above active rail lines on a 2.3 acre, air-tight site. The buildings express their structural engineering with the A Frames visible along the stainless steel and glass façades.
