Project
Required to design a new public space or spaces in the city of Southampton together with a new a market hall, space or street together with residential accommodation and retail provision.
Required to design a new public space or spaces in the city of Southampton together with a new a market hall, space or street together with residential accommodation and retail provision.
Location
Sandwiched between Western Esplanade & Portland Terrace. The site is located within the boundary of the historic ‘Old Town’ area of Southampton, close to the location of the former castle. It consists of a large urban space, the edges of which are only partially framed by buildings.
The potential of the site has not been realised as an important contribution to the urban fabric of Southampton. The site marks a transition in scale and topography in the existing city. To the north, the large-scale retail units of ‘West Quay’ prevail. To the south, towards the heart of the ‘Old Town’
a more domestic scale is apparent, sloping down towards the sea.
Moving from east to west there is a dramatic drop in level, beyond the remnants of the city wall and the future proposal of FOA scheme.
